Singapore-based company Datagrid has been approved to build a data center in New Zealand.
According to their website, it will be used for:
AI training, processing and data storage and will serve global AI and cloud providers
If it is built, it will be the country’s second-largest electricity user.
According to an Environment Southland regional council report, the company has approval to:
- Discharge air contaminants from up to 84 diesel back-up generators
- Draw up to 604,800 litres of groundwater per day
- Discharge up to 5000 litres of treated wastewater a day
- Remove a nearby wetland
Local residents are worried about their air, water, nature, and noise pollution.
