Big Tech carbon emissions growing exponentially

Google is seeing the biggest emission gains of the top tech players, but Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are all seeing increases as well:

Carbon emissions from things like data centers aren’t new, but AI is significantly accelerating them, as these charts show. That’s in stark contrast to the sales pitches by big tech companies that AI will figure out how to solve things like climate change.

In an in-depth report, Ketan Joshi points out:

Google’s power consumption rose by 7 TWh between 2023 and 2024. That was bad. But it rose by a whopping 12 TWh between 2024 and 2025, almost double last year’s increase. Google’s power consumption isn’t just growing – the rate at which it is growing is growing. We have a word for this: exponential growth.
