{"id":33,"date":"2026-07-07T05:27:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T05:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madebyhumans.international\/?p=33"},"modified":"2026-07-07T05:27:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T05:27:43","slug":"major-llms-change-meaning-while-summarizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madebyhumans.international\/news\/major-llms-change-meaning-while-summarizing\/","title":{"rendered":"Major LLMs change meaning while summarizing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers from the Oxford Internet Institute and the Hasso Plattner Institute found that major AI chatbots xAI, Meta, Google, Alibaba and Mistral <strong>significantly changed the meaning of text<\/strong> while summarizing it, even <em>after<\/em> being instructed to preserve the original sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They found <strong>repeatable political slants<\/strong>, reflecting the culture of the team who trained each AI model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also found amplifying effects, where the initial bias introduced in the summary gets multiplied to drift <strong>even further<\/strong> away from the original meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As co-author Prof Sandra Wachter put it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost is that we are learning other people\u2019s opinions when it is not their actual opinion<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s completely profound. Language is one of the things making us human and all of a sudden a mediator is stepping into that process.
